چکیده

This article examines how humour in Arabic stand-up comedies is translated into English an audio-visual context. The study uses a case of streamed on Netflix, including Live from Beirut by Adel Karam and Comedians the World/ Middle East. shows which are subtitled involve variety Arab comedians speaking different dialects, Levant dialect (Lebanese, Jordanian, Palestinian) Gulf particularly Saudi dialect. While several studies were conducted to examine translation Arabic, very few explore English, especially realm translation. two languages reflecting norms cultures and, therefore, many linguistic cultural challenges expected arise process between them. draws Pederson’s (2005) strategies for translating references Díaz-Pérez’s (2013) wordplay puns. identifies types used comedies, namely language-restricted jokes (wordplay, puns, language variation, taboo language) culture-restricted require knowledge about concept or character being referred to. Several Netflix subtitlers render these paraphrasing, generalizing, specification, substitution, omission.
